Born in Bahia in 1942, Caetano Veloso is a Brazilian composer, musician, writer and political activist. After moving to Salvador as a college student in the 1960s, Veloso won a contest and was signed to his first label. Due to his political views and activist songs, the young student was viewed as a threat to Brazil's military dictatorship and was sent into exile. He lived in London until his return to Brazil in 1972. His popularity rose not only in Brazil but in Israel, Greece, Portugal, France and Africa in the 1980s. Caetano Veloso has won five Latin Grammy Awards and currently lives in Brazil.
